First Rehearsal For MEMPHIS on Broadway!

As one new musical ends its run in Seattle, another begins rehearsals in New York.

MEMPHIS the dynamic new musical that premiered here at The 5th Avenue Theatre last winter is now headed to Broadway and the first rehearsal was Monday! The show will give its first performance on September 23 and have its official Opening Night on October 19.

Check out the publicity photo shoot (below) featuring stunning new images of Chad Kimball and Montego Glover that are now plastered all over the front of New York’s Shubert Theatre and the show's nifty new website.

Any thoughts on what's changed post-Seattle, or will we just have to wait and see? I found all of the characters very difficult to like, and the lack of any sort of personification of the force of racism (other than one brief scene) to make it hard to find momentum. And the music just didn't feel very "50s black R&B-becoming-R&R" to me. It felt like it was covering HAIRSPRAY's ground much less successfully.

I wish the company luck, but I have to admit, it wasn't one of my favorites from the 5th.
